Asgmt 2: Case Analysis (Individual) 70% of your semester mark The electricity supply market is changing globally. In Australia, with the rapid uptake of personal solar generation options, this is proving to have a huge impact on the entire generation and distribution industry. In the past, procurement by power companies was heavily focused on large capital, often project-based acquisitions (power plants and power distribution grids), maintenance and fuel. These represented large investments of cash and resources over many years. Now however, individuals are providing large amounts of power themselves, which has reduced the utilisation and viability of company investments, and requires a different approach into the future. When local power storage becomes truly practical, this will accelerate problems for the power generation and distribution companies. Unless they refocus their procurement strategies they will not survive, and in any case may need to change their structures and products dramatically. From the perspective of Australian power generators and grid providers, answer the following questions: 1. Detail current and past power generation and distribution structures and products, identifying how they interact. 2. Outline current procurement practices for the different organisations in this industry. You should consider their approach to capital, maintenance and operating activities. You should also consider project v operating activities. 3. Describe the electricity market in Australia. Consider private and business customers, and how they purchase power now and how it will change in the future. Use statistics 4. Consider new technologies and the impact they are having on procurement, both for end customers and for producers in the supply chain. Whats in the future? 5. Outline a procurement strategy that will allow suppliers to transition from traditional approaches to new technologies. Approach You can find a lot of information on the web about this. Do lots of Google searches. Be quantitative where possible. I would like to see percentages and numbers for the facts you use. Use intext citations. You should have at least 10 references. These dont have to be academic ones; any reliable source is OK. The report should be approximately 10 Pages in length, so you will need to be concise. Provide specific answers to the above questions. You dont need to provide an essay style report, and there is no need for introductions, abstracts or summaries. I will provide useful resources on BB as we proceed. We will also have a discussion in a class. For onliners I will summarise that discussion into a bulletin, and I will advise the date so you can come along if you can. Submit this through Turnitin.
