I chose to write about the writings of Dunbar and Chopin.  I feel both writers wanted to express themselves, and deliver a pretty convincing point of view.  Dunbar wrote a poem titled, “Sympathy”.  He writes about a bird in a cage, and how the bird sings and flaps its wings, but still he can not get out of the cage.  I believe the bird is actually a metaphor for the writer himself.  Being a black man during these times were difficult, and how he had a lack of freedom just like the bird in the cage.  One line in his poem he is quoted saying ” I know how the caged bird feels” (Dunbar, Poetry Foundation).  I feel the writer wants complete freedom, and to show everyone that he is much more than a black man.  Kate Chopin wrote something similar in my opinion about finding freedom with a piece called “The Story of an Hour”.  It was about a woman thinks that her husband is dead.  She is relieved, and now has found the freedom she has been looking for all this time.  Later on in the story, she finds out that her husband is alive the whole time.  ” She could see in the open square before her house the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life.” (Chopin, The Story of an Hour.)  I think that both writers are successful in getting their point across, and I enjoyed reading about new writers.
